Ours is not a Caravan of Despair

Coffee, more than anything to me, is about reflection. From the grinding and brewing ritual, to the gripping of that warm cup, to our slow slurpful sips, savoring every aroma and preparing ourselves for the day ahead. Coffee to me is about that.

We have a new year coming ahead of us and it reminds me of something a friend once told me. He asked me to think about what my life was like five years ago. I thought about it, how different everything was, who I was then, where I was living, what I was doing. “Is it different from now?” He asked. “Yes, very different,” I said. “Now, could you ever have imagined then, what your life would be now?” “No, of course not,” I replied. Then he said something that has always stuck with me, he said: “Ok, now think about how ridiculous it is for you to think you know where you’ll be in five years.” I think about this, not only when I reflect on the year to come but also when I think about the troubles of our world. For all we know, things could look very different in five years. Things could look very different in five months. We have no way of knowing. As someone who has experienced war and true desperation more than once in my life, I can tell you, we truly do not know what lies ahead and despair benefits no one. In my experience, it’s always wise to hope for and work for the best. Manifesting and visual thinking are powerful tools we all possess and as Rumi once said, “Our’s is not a caravan of despair.”

In general, I don’t put a lot of stock in New Year's resolutions, New Year’s celebrations or anything like that. Certainly, the days, months, and seasons are not arbitrary but the actual point we place in time to determine the years feels to me like it could be any other day. That said, I believe that there’s incredible value in taking stock of where we are, how we’ve used our time, and who we want to be/become with the time we have left. So, that’s what I'll be doing come New Years. My life, right now, is rapidly changing. For all of you who have followed me on this journey and see yourselves in my story, I'm actually really excited right now for what we have in store. A lot brewing…

Happy holidays and happy new year, friends. Stay caffeinated.
